This study was undertaken to investigate the extent and cognitions of pupil¡¯s dental
experience and the relationship. 665 children (M365, F300), being 4th, 5th, 6th grade of
elementary school in Seoul, were given the questionnaire. All children had previous
dental experience.
The results were as follows :
1. Girls were more fearful about dentistry than boys and there was no significant
difference in grades.
2. The best things about denial visit were removal of toothache, good dental care,
refreshness, etc.
3. The worst things about dental visit were dental machines and instruments,
extraction, local anesthetic injection, etc.
4. As sources of positive information about dentistry, children cited mother, father,
school nurse, teacher frequently.
5. As sources of negative information about dentistry, children cited peers, siblings
frequently.
6. The less the dental experiences were, the more negative attitudes toward dentistry
children cited.
7. Children who visited dentist irregularly had more negative attitudes toward
dentistry than children who visited dentist regularly.
